Ohio Earthship Biotecture: A Sustainable Sanctuary

At Peaceful Acres Lavender Farm, our commitment to nature extends beyond our fields and into the very structures we build. We are home to one of Ohio’s few Earthship Biotectures—a fully sustainable, off-grid structure built entirely from recycled materials and natural resources.

Designed to exist in harmony with the environment, our Earthship is more than just a building; it is a living demonstration of how we can reduce our carbon footprint while increasing our quality of life.

Built from the Earth, For the Earth

Constructing this architectural marvel was a labor of love and community effort. The structure utilizes "garbage" that would otherwise sit in landfills, transforming it into thermal mass walls that provide natural insulation and strength.

The Build by the Numbers:

  • 1,400+ Recycled Tires: Packed with earth to form the massive load-bearing walls.

  • 490,000 lbs of Dirt: Pounded into the tires by hand to create dense, temperature-regulating thermal mass.

  • 400+ Cases of Glass Bottles: Used to create beautiful, stained-glass-like walls that let in light while maintaining insulation.

  • 200+ Cases of Aluminum Cans: Used as filler in the interior walls, mortared with mud.

  • 1.25 Million Pounds: The estimated total weight of natural and recycled materials used to create this sanctuary.

How It Works: Six Principles of Sustainability

Our Earthship is designed to be an autonomous vessel, providing for its own needs without relying on public utilities.

  1. Thermal/Solar Heating & Cooling: The tire walls (thermal mass) absorb heat from the sun during the day and release it at night, keeping the interior comfortable year-round without a furnace or AC.

  2. Solar & Wind Electricity: We harvest energy from the sun and wind to power our lights and electrical needs.

  3. Water Harvesting: The roof is designed to catch rain and snow melt, which is then filtered and stored for use.

  4. Sewage Treatment: We utilize contained treatment systems that turn waste into nourishment for plants (botanical cells).

  5. Building with Natural & Recycled Materials: Reducing the impact of manufacturing new construction materials.

  6. Food Production: The design incorporates greenhouse areas to grow food inside the structure, regardless of the Ohio winter.

Experience the Earthship

The Earthship serves as the heart of our Wellness Center and educational programs. Because the structure is grounded in the earth and built with natural materials, it provides a uniquely grounding and quiet atmosphere perfect for healing and learning.

  • Wellness Workshops: Join us for Reiki, Reflexology, and Gong Meditation sessions held within the tranquil walls of the Earthship.

  • Tours & Education: Learn about sustainable living, green building methods, and how you can apply these principles to your own life.
